What is Kerala Black Pepper?
Black pepper (Piper nigrum) is the dried fruit of a tropical flowering vine, cultivated in Kerala’s spice hills since the 1st century BC. Known worldwide as the “King of Spices,” Kerala’s Idukki and Wayanad districts produce some of the most flavourful pepper in the world, thanks to the region’s altitude (800–1,200 m), humidity, and red lateritic soil.
Why Kerala Black Pepper is different
Our pepper has a measurably higher piperine content (6–8%) than pepper from other regions (typically 3–5%). Piperine is the compound responsible for the heat and the health benefits. Each batch is harvested by hand when fully ripe, sun-dried on open yards for 7–10 days, and hand-sorted — no machine polishing, no artificial colour, no fumigation.
Culinary uses
• Freshly ground over cooked dishes — soups, curries, grilled meats, eggs
• Crushed into marinades, dry rubs, and pickles
• Whole in biryanis, pulao, stocks, mulled wine, and masala chai
• Infused into oils and vinegars
• Core ingredient in garam masala, pepper rasam, and Kerala mulaku charu
Health benefits
Rich in piperine, manganese, iron, and vitamin K. Traditionally used in Ayurveda to:
• Aid digestion by stimulating digestive enzymes
• Improve nutrient absorption — piperine increases bioavailability of turmeric’s curcumin by up to 2,000%
• Support respiratory health (classical remedy for cough and cold)
• Act as a natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory
How to store
Keep whole peppercorns in an airtight glass jar, away from heat and sunlight. Grind just before use to preserve the volatile aromatic oils. Once ground, pepper loses aroma within 3 months — whole peppercorns stay fresh for up to 18 months.

Frequently asked questions
What makes Kerala black pepper better than other varieties?
Kerala pepper grows in the high-altitude Idukki and Wayanad hills, where cool nights and lateritic soil produce peppercorns with higher piperine content (6–8% vs 3–5% elsewhere), giving a sharper heat and more complex aroma.
How much black pepper should I use per day?
For culinary use, 1–2 g (about half a teaspoon ground) per day is typical. Consult an Ayurvedic practitioner for medicinal quantities.
How do I know if my black pepper is pure?
Pure peppercorns are uniformly dark, slightly wrinkled, and feel heavy for their size. They should smell sharp when crushed. If more than 5% of the peppercorns float in water, the pack may be adulterated with papaya seeds or light fillers.
Can black pepper be used daily?
Yes — up to one teaspoon of ground pepper daily is safe and beneficial for most adults. Pregnant women and people with stomach ulcers should consult a doctor.
What is the difference between black, white, and green pepper?
All three come from the same plant (Piper nigrum). Green pepper is unripe and brined; black pepper is sun-dried ripe berries; white pepper is ripe berries with the outer skin removed. Black pepper has the most complete flavour profile.
How long does whole black pepper last?
Whole peppercorns retain their aroma and heat for 12–18 months when stored in an airtight container away from sunlight. Ground pepper loses aroma within 3 months.
Is this pepper suitable for export?
Yes — our pepper meets export quality standards (EU grade), sun-dried, hand-cleaned, and free from fumigation or irradiation.
